Orthocerida ("straight horn") is an order of extinct cephalopod. These animals were likely similar to the modern squid, except for the long shell encasing some of the body. Being invertebrates, it's that shell that has been fossilized, with the body only being soft tissue. These creatures appeared 500 million years ago, and became extinct 385 million years ago during the Devonian period.
