Ambrotypes were an early form of photography using a wet plate collodion process to transfer a positive image on a sheet of glass. The back of the glass would then be painted black, or set atop a black piece of cloth to better display the image. Ambrotypes were widely used in the 1850s-1860s, until being replaced by tin types as the more common form of photography.
